ITV Thriller 'Red Eye' Set for Third Series After Streaming Success
The acclaimed ITV thriller Red Eye is reportedly poised to make a highly anticipated return for a third series, following initial concerns that the programme might face cancellation. This development comes after the show's second series concluded with a dramatic cliffhanger, leaving viewers eager for more.
Overcoming Initial Ratings Challenges
Earlier this year, the drama faced stiff competition when it aired opposite the BBC's heavily promoted series The Night Manager, which impacted its initial viewing figures. A television insider commented on the situation, stating, "The drama launched on New Year’s Day and went up against one of the most hyped shows of 2026 so far, so it always faced a challenge."
However, the show's fortunes were significantly bolstered by its performance on the streaming service ITVX. The insider added, "But it met that challenge and also had the figures hugely boosted by viewers watching it on streaming service ITVX, which is one of the most important measures of a programme’s success these days."
Streaming Performance Drives Renewal Decision
This strong streaming performance has transformed the outlook for the series. From fears that it might not return, bringing Red Eye back is now considered a logical move for ITV, though the broadcaster has yet to officially recommission the third outing or confirm castings. The Mirror has reached out to ITV for an official comment on the renewal reports.
Cast and Plot Details
The drama, which first premiered last year, stars Richard Armitage as a doctor entangled in a serious crime overseas, with Jing Lusi playing the detective assigned to escort him back to the United Kingdom. The six-part thriller follows their journey as they uncover a rapidly expanding conspiracy amidst a rising death toll.
For its second series, Line of Duty star Martin Compston joined the cast as Clay Brody, the Head of Embassy Security and a former colleague of DS Hana Li who had previously betrayed her. Reports suggest that Compston is expected to reprise this role in the upcoming third series.
The plot of the second series centred on a lockdown at the US Embassy in London, triggered by a threat to blow up a British plane if anyone left. This situation led to a series of murders, forcing DS Hana Li to collaborate with Brody to solve the case before time ran out for hostages and plane passengers.
Fans can currently stream both series of Red Eye on ITVX, enjoying the suspenseful narrative that has captivated audiences and secured its future on television.
