ITV Thriller 'Gone' Concludes with Stunning Finale Twist
The Bristol-based ITV thriller Gone has wrapped up its six-part series with a dramatic finale that left viewers utterly stunned. The conclusion featured a brilliant twist that many admitted they completely failed to predict, as Detective Annie Cassidy finally solved the murder case of music teacher Sarah.
The Investigation Takes a Dramatic Turn
Featuring Welsh actress Eve Myles as Detective Annie Cassidy and David Morrissey as local headmaster Michael Polly, the plot presented a complex game of cat-and-mouse. Michael had become the primary suspect following his wife Sarah's disappearance, despite maintaining his innocence throughout the investigation.
In the concluding episode, fresh evidence emerged that dramatically altered the direction of the entire investigation. Annie Cassidy, who had skillfully used her position as Family Liaison Officer to uncover devastating truths, became convinced that Michael was innocent despite his earlier confession.
The Shocking Killer Reveal
Midway through the final episode, a completely new suspect emerged: Rory Bowman, deputy head of St Bartholomew's School and a former student there. Annie discerned the truth upon realizing that keys found near Sarah's body actually belonged to Rory.
Through astute conversation, Annie discovered that Rory had been in love with Sarah and had learned she was having an affair with Stephen Sedwick, a parent of pupil and rugby star Dylan, who had also been under suspicion. During their confrontation, Rory admitted to strangling Sarah to death, claiming it was an accident during an intense argument.
"I found out about Sarah's affair with Stephen Sedgwick, and confronted her about it," Rory confessed to Annie. "She lied to me. She kept telling me it was over when it wasn't. I told her to stop, for the sake of the school. My school would have suffered if the news got out. But she kept shouting and shouting. I wanted her to stop shouting."
Viewer Reactions and Series Conclusion
Following the dramatic revelation, viewers took to social media to express their shock at the unexpected twist. Many confessed they hadn't managed to predict the killer's identity at all throughout the series.
One viewer posted: "I'm gone after the last episode of #Gone. I didn't guess the killer at all and just a mystery we all need to escape the world!! Enjoy folks you are in for a roller coaster."
Another chimed in: "I just watched the last 2 episodes of #gone. What a phenomenal series. The acting was incredible. I had goosebumps at the end. Bravo to all concerned."
A third viewer added: "Binge watched Gone on @ITVX last couple of nights. Well worth a watch. Proper 'who done it' (Sherlock here got it wrong). Brilliant twists and turns over 6 episodes. Eve Myles and David Morrisey absolutely superb."
The series concluded with Annie realizing she must sever ties with her toxic husband Craig, while also perusing the file of the unresolved Tina Bradley case, suggesting potential for a second series featuring Eve Myles' character.
Gone aired its final episode on Monday March 23 at 9pm on ITV1, capping off a suspenseful thriller that kept audiences guessing until the very end.
