ITV's Betrayal Faces Viewer Backlash Over 'Glaring' Plot Holes in Second Episode

ITV's new spy thriller Betrayal has faced criticism from viewers after its second episode aired, with fans pointing out what they describe as 'glaring' plot holes. The four-part drama, starring Shaun Evans as MI5 agent John Hughes, initially received positive reviews for its debut episode, but the follow-up left many questioning the plausibility of events.

Set in Manchester, the series follows Hughes as he navigates a crumbling marriage while protecting national security, after becoming involved in a conspiracy involving a murdered informant. However, viewers took to social media to highlight perceived oversights in the show's depiction of MI5 tradecraft.

One fan questioned why an MI5 agent would fail to hide a message on a lock screen, while another asked why no one ran out after the first of two deaths in episode one, or started filming with a mobile phone. A third viewer queried the logistics of a shootout at an airport in broad daylight, and the use of explosive barrels as cover.

Despite the criticisms, many fans remain captivated by the series, which also stars Romola Garai and Zahra Ahmadi. Shaun Evans' performance has been praised, with one admirer calling it 'simply phenomenal'. The show currently holds a 6.7 rating on IMDb, with one reviewer describing it as a 'well-paced and nicely twisty show'.
