The triumphant revival of Gladiators on the BBC has cemented its status as one of television's most spectacular successes, with the rebooted nineties format rapidly evolving into a global 'superbrand'. With the American version of the show, titled American Gladiators, scheduled to premiere on Prime Video next week, insiders reveal that producers are actively developing plans to capitalise on this phenomenal popularity through a proposed UK versus USA spin-off series.
From UK Revival to Transatlantic Ambitions
Since its highly anticipated return to Saturday night television in 2024, the Gladiators revival has achieved monumental ratings, sparking a nationwide live tour and an immersive Gladiators Live Experience that has captivated fans across the country. The show's executives are reportedly so confident in the impending success of American Gladiators that they are already plotting a major transatlantic crossover event.
A Television Goldmine
A production source emphasised the show's extraordinary commercial performance, stating: 'The brand has become a goldmine in the UK. Not only is it a huge ratings hit, but the nationwide tour and Live Experience are raking in millions. It's no wonder the Americans want in. It feels like Gladiators is on the brink of becoming a global superbrand.' The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Gladiators for official comment regarding these ambitious expansion plans.
American Gladiators: A New Chapter
American Gladiators is set to launch on Prime Video on April 17th, featuring a cast of 'global' elite athletes including CrossFit champions and professional bodybuilders. The series will consist of ten episodes broadcast across three intense weeks, with contestants competing for a substantial $100,000 prize and the coveted title of American Gladiator Champion.
This development represents a fascinating full-circle moment for the franchise, as the original UK version that aired from 1992 to 2000 was itself based on the American format. The current BBC revival, hosted by father-son duo Bradley and Barney Walsh, has already spawned three successful series, two celebrity specials, and a CBBC spin-off, with numerous Gladiators making notable appearances on other major shows including Strictly Come Dancing and The Great British Sewing Bee.
The 2026 Champions Crowned
The most recent UK series reached its thrilling conclusion last month, with Emily Bell and Josh McDonald emerging victorious as the ultimate Gladiators Champions of 2026. The action-packed finale at Sheffield's Utilita Arena saw the final four contestants—Emily, Naomi Church, Josh, and Tyler Spence—face the Gladiators one last time in a series of intense challenges.
Viewers witnessed several remarkable moments, including Emily, who works in marketing and events, becoming the first contestant ever to knock the Gladiator Sabre off the podium during the Duel event. After defeating the Gladiators, Emily began the Eliminator race with a six-second advantage over Naomi, with the two competitors remaining neck-and-neck until Naomi encountered difficulties on the balance beam. Emily ultimately secured victory by reaching the top of the travelator first.
'No words. That was unforgettable! I just won Gladiators on my 23rd birthday,' an elated Emily exclaimed to hosts Bradley and Barney Walsh. She added: 'We've made history as the oldest and youngest contestants and I'm so glad I got to the final with Naomi.'
In the men's competition, Josh and Tyler battled fiercely for the championship title, with Josh beginning with a 1.5-second advantage. Although Tyler initially overtook Josh while climbing the net, a crucial slip on the balance beam forced him to return to the start, allowing former Royal Marine Commando trainee Josh to seize the crown by mastering the beam and ascending the travelator first.
Reflecting on his victory, Josh said: 'We knew it was going to be a close battle and it could have gone either way. I was thinking about my mum the entire time, this win is for my family.'
As the Gladiators phenomenon continues to expand both domestically and internationally, with the American reboot poised for launch and transatlantic collaboration plans underway, the franchise demonstrates remarkable resilience and enduring appeal, transforming nostalgic entertainment into a contemporary television powerhouse with global aspirations.
