The American remake of the BBC comedy series Ghosts has arrived on Netflix for UK viewers, and fans are calling it a 'masterpiece', with some arguing it is even better than the original.
Episodes from the first three seasons of Ghosts US are now available on the streaming platform. Those without a Netflix subscription can still watch all five released seasons on BBC iPlayer at no extra cost.
What is Ghosts US about?
The series follows freelance journalist Samantha and ambitious chef Jay, who decide to convert a run-down country estate they inherited into a bed and breakfast. They soon discover the property is inhabited by the spirits of deceased residents, including a Prohibition-era lounge singer, a pompous 1700s militiaman, a '60s hippie, and an upbeat '80s scout troop leader.
Samantha is the first living person who can see and hear the ghosts, leading to comedic chaos as the renovation and B&B plans disrupt the spirits' home.
Fans compare it to the original
The remake has a marginally higher score on Rotten Tomatoes, with 97% compared to the original's 96%. Viewers have been quick to share their opinions online.
One person claimed: "So much better than the UK version. This version is superior in every way. The ghosts are more interesting and the storylines have more depth."
Another added: "This show is brilliant. Yes, of course I compared it to the original when I watched the pilot. And yes, of course I struggled to adapt. But this is a great show. It's very American, of course it is. It's made for the US market. It's humour is different. It is, dare I say it, better than the original. Sharper, funnier and faster moving."
What is next for the franchise?
The original BBC series ran from 2019 until 2023 across five series and three Christmas specials. A spin-off film, subtitled The Possession of Button House, is set to arrive in cinemas this week.
A sixth season of Ghosts US is on the way, which will soon surpass the original in longevity. Ghosts US is streaming on Netflix and BBC iPlayer.
