Great British Bake Off's Secret Tricks to Beat Heatwave and Keep Filming
GBBO's Secret Tricks to Beat Heatwave and Keep Filming

The Great British Bake Off has employed extreme measures to keep filming on track during the UK's record-breaking heatwave, with crew members opening tent sides for airflow and handing out ice lollies to bakers and staff.

Cooling Measures on Set

A show source revealed: “Every measure that could be taken has been, to make the bakers comfortable. The lighting gaffer from the crew who’s in first every morning, opens up the tent, takes down the sides and gets airflow moving before everyone arrives.” The same gaffer had earlier arrived early to heat the tent during freezing conditions.

Production runners have also distributed ice lollies throughout the day to keep everyone cool. Additionally, bakers and crew cool off by paddling in a beautiful stream at the tent's location in Welford Park, Berkshire, during lunch breaks and between challenges.

Natural Airflow and Breeze

During filming in the final weekend of May, a “welcome breeze” saved bakers and their creations from overheating. The source added: “There was a breeze and with the sides of the tent down thanks to the lighting gaffer, it created a natural airflow through the space, almost like a wind tunnel. In fact, by the end of the showstopper bake they actually had to put the sides back up to stop the bakes being blown over!”

New Judge Nigella Lawson

This year's series, expected to return in the autumn, will feature new judge Nigella Lawson, who replaced Prue Leith. Nigella said: “I’m uncharacteristically rather lost for words right now. Of course it’s daunting to be following in the footsteps of Prue Leith and Mary Berry before her, great dames both, but I’m also bubbling with excitement. The Great British Bake Off is more than a television programme, it’s a National Treasure – and it’s a huge honour to be entrusted with it.”

The show will once again be hosted by Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding.
