Friends is returning to free UK television on Channel 4 in January 2027, ending a 15-year absence from free-to-air channels. All 10 seasons, totalling 236 episodes, will be available to stream, giving fans the chance to binge the entire series without a subscription.
Return to its original home
Friends first aired on Channel 4 and E4 throughout the 1990s and 2000s, introducing UK audiences to the sitcom starring Ross (David Schwimmer), Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), Monica (Courteney Cox), Chandler (Matthew Perry), Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) and Joey (Matt LeBlanc).
After leaving Channel 4 and later E4, the show moved to Netflix UK for several years, where it regularly featured in the streaming platform's most popular section. It was then removed last year and became available on HBO Max in the UK.
Free access for UK viewers
While Friends will remain on HBO Max, Channel 4's move means viewers who do not want to pay an extra monthly fee can watch it for free.
Channel 4 content strategy boss Kiran Nataraja said: 'Its witty, character-led comedy and lasting popularity make it a natural fit for Channel 4. Cherished by long-time fans and continuing to attract new viewers, it will complement the distinctive programming across our slate.'
Polly Scates, who struck the Channel 4 deal, added: 'Most of us remember exactly where we were when we watched the Friends finale. This iconic series has enduring appeal and continues to bring together audiences of all ages.'
