Motherwell has been identified as the UK's luckiest postcode area for Lotto millionaires relative to its adult population, according to new data from The National Lottery. The figures, which date back to the lottery's launch in 1994, show that Motherwell has produced one millionaire for every 4,156 adults, equivalent to about 2.41 millionaires per 10,000 adults.
Glasgow among top UK areas for total millionaires
Glasgow is the third top postcode area for millionaires across the UK, with a total of 178 winners recorded. Birmingham leads the UK with 234 millionaires, followed by Belfast with 202. The figures cover both winners who went public and those who chose to remain anonymous, and relate to postcode areas rather than individual full postcodes or council boundaries.
However, larger postcode areas will naturally have more winners simply because the population is higher. Comparing totals with the estimated adult population offers a better insight into how 'lucky' a particular area is.
Scottish postcodes feature in top 10 relative list
Dumfries also made the top 10 list for millionaires relative to adult population, coming in at number four, while Watford and Liverpool took second and third places respectively. Other lucky Scottish postcode areas include Galashiels, Perth and Dundee, which were revealed as areas of the UK with the most Higher Tier winners per head of population.
In Galashiels, 1 in 792 people are Lotto winners, while in Perth the data shows 1 in 846, and in Dundee, 1 in 893 people. The 'Higher Tier' winner count includes any win worth over £50,000 but less than £1M, separately from the millionaire totals.
New-look Lotto creates more millionaires
In 2026, a total of 140 Lotto players have become millionaires so far, which equates to around one every 48 hours. More than half of these winners have been since the launch of the new-look Lotto game in June, where players were given two chances to win from the same ticket. Organisers predict this will lead to twice as many new Lotto millionaires each year.
Kathy Garrett, Winners Experience Lead at Allwyn, operator of The National Lottery, said: "One of the things we love most about The National Lottery is seeing luck turn up in every corner of the UK. From big cities to small towns, we've celebrated thousands of life-changing wins over the years, and these figures show that there is no single postcode for luck."
The top 10 postcode areas for millionaire totals are: Birmingham (234), Belfast (202), Glasgow (178), Sheffield (171), Liverpool (166), Manchester (163), Newcastle (154), Cardiff (144), Peterborough (142), and Leicester (127). The top 10 postcode areas for millionaires relative to adult population are: Motherwell, Watford, Liverpool, Dumfries, Romford, Durham, Llandrindod Wells, St Albans, Sunderland, and Hull.
