Emmerdale's Bear Wolf Killed in Harrowing Modern Slavery Storyline
Emmerdale's Bear Wolf killed in modern slavery plot

A beloved Emmerdale character has met a grim end as part of the soap's hard-hitting modern slavery plot. Bear Wolf, played by actor Joshua Richards since 2019, was murdered by supervillain Celia Daniels in harrowing scenes set to air on New Year's Day.

A Shocking End for a Village Staple

In disturbing episodes, Celia attempts to take the life of young April before confirming to her partner-in-crime, Ray, that she has 'finished the job' with Bear. The character's death marks a brutal conclusion to a storyline that has seen him manipulated and exploited. Actor Joshua Richards undertook extensive research for the role, consulting with The Salvation Army and meeting survivors of modern slavery to authentically portray Bear's vulnerability.

Richards issued a stark warning to viewers, stating: 'A lot of people say, well, I'd never be scammed online. But so many people are, and they are intelligent and bright.' He emphasised that exploitation often begins with feigned kindness, adding: 'That is what we've got to be aware of in this modern-day society... it does happen, and it's happening now.'

Raising Awareness of a Hidden Crime

The actor praised the soap's handling of the sensitive topic, describing it as 'outstanding'. 'Modern slavery is alive and well, and it's horrifying,' Richards said. 'I think it was very brave for them to bring this subject forward... this is a subject that most of the time is brushed under the carpet. But they brought it to the forefront of our minds.'

When asked if Bear's underlying battle with depression made him a target, despite his strong physique, Richards agreed it was a key factor. He drew parallels with his late father's experiences, noting how a once strong leader can be reduced to a state where they are easily manipulated. However, he stressed a message of hope, affirming that recovery is possible with the right support.

Villain's Exit and Lasting Impact

The demise of Bear Wolf coincides with the impending departure of his tormentor. Actress Jaye Griffiths, 62, who plays the sinister Celia, has filmed her final scenes. A source revealed that while Celia 'must be seen to get her comeuppance', the chaos and secrets she leaves behind will continue to ripple through the village.

Griffiths, who hopes the storyline sparks vital conversations, commented on the challenge of her role: 'Sometimes, when I read the script, I think, 'really? You're going to make me say that?'... Hopefully, maybe conversations will start to be heard.' She pondered how ordinary people can be vigilant, questioning situations in nail bars or car washes where exploitation may occur.

Emmerdale airs on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
