Emmerdale Hit With Ofcom Complaints Over Tom King Storyline

Emmerdale has received a barrage of complaints to Ofcom after scenes depicting the death of Belle Dingle's dog Piper at the hands of her abusive husband Tom King. The ITV soap's episode on August 16th, which showed Tom running over the dog in a bid to regain control over his estranged wife, garnered 183 complaints. A further 99 complaints were lodged for the August 19th episode, where Tom informed Belle of the dog's death and hinted at his involvement.

Viewers took to social media to express their outrage, with many stating they had stopped watching the soap entirely. Actor James Chase, who plays Tom, defended the storyline, saying: 'Tom is well aware of the control he can exert by using his dog in his abuse of Belle. This deliberate act, although horrifying, is Tom’s way of getting back in Belle’s life.'

Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw explained the decision to include the plot, noting that working with charities and hearing from domestic abuse survivors revealed it is 'all too common that domestic abusers will use the family pet as a weapon.' She added that the storyline aims to show Tom's desperation to maintain control, and questioned whether Piper's death might finally motivate Belle to report her husband.

In subsequent scenes, Belle sought help under Clare's Law, also known as the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme, which allows individuals to check if their partner has a history of abuse. During a tense exchange, Tom chillingly hinted at his responsibility for Piper's death, leaving Belle horrified.
