Belle Dingle has decided to come face-to-face with her abusive ex-husband Tom King in prison after learning he is set to be released, a move that some viewers described as "terrifying."
The wedding planner, played by Eden Taylor-Draper, was horrified to hear that Tom's time behind bars will soon be up. Tom was sentenced to three years in prison in 2024 following a high-profile storyline that saw Belle endure an abusive marriage.
Less than two years into that sentence, Belle learned of his imminent release and then bumped into vicar Charles Anderson, who was aware of the news through his prison chaplaincy project. Charles suggested Tom might now be a reformed character.
Tom's Request for Forgiveness
Charles told Belle: "I had a conversation with him a few days ago, at Tom's request. He asked to talk about some things. He asked about forgiveness and atonement, specifically. He said over the course of his sentence, he's accepted culpability for his actions."
He added: "He also seemed anxious to ask for your forgiveness. To try to and make his peace with you before he's released." The news sent Belle spiralling, and she instantly believed her ex-husband was trying to control her again and was out for revenge.
Charles suggested victim-offender mediation, but Belle stormed out of the cafe, raging: "He's done this before. When I went to see him in there, he told me he'd found God and he was a better person, and I don't believe it any more now than I did then."
Belle's Decision to Face Tom
Despite initially refusing any contact, Belle later told her partner Kammy Hadiq: "I need to find out where his head's at, Kammy, what he's got planned. I can't just sit here, helpless, waiting, can I? I need to get ahead of this. I've decided I've got to go see him. I've got to face this head-on."
Viewers were immediately concerned about what Tom's return could mean for Belle. One wrote on X: "how tf is tom getting out of prison so soon after everything he did to belle i swear it's barely even been two years. i feel terrified for belle though shes really gonna be living on the edge again knowing that psycho could find her any moment."
Another raged: "Why are they bringing Tom back? I know it's a short stint, but why? Just let Belle be happy ffs." A third said: "As much as I hated the character Tom King, the actor played the part brilliantly and I'm glad he's coming back into the soap."
Producers and Actor on the Return
Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw said of the storyline: "James' return isn't just about bringing back a familiar face; it's about reigniting a complex and challenging story. When Belle gets the news that Tom is up for parole she's forced to confront a trauma she battled hard to overcome. With her family and new partner Kammy by her side, we explore the lasting impact of Tom's abusive actions on Belle as she fights to keep Tom away from the village."
Actor James Chase added: "Stepping back into Tom's shoes is a responsibility I don't take lightly. He is a character driven by obsession and a desperate need for control, and it is both fascinating and challenging to step back into that mindset. The audience knows exactly who he is and what he is capable of, so the challenge now is to show the lengths he is willing to go to in order to get what he wants, even if it means dismantling Belle's life all over again. It's a dark path, and I'm ready to see how far Tom will push it."
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
