EastEnders fans have issued a plea to show bosses after Monday's episode hinted at the return of fan-favourite Karen Taylor. The character, played by Lorraine Stanley, made an offscreen comeback via a voicemail message and phone call, marking her first appearance in two years. The unexpected return was not announced ahead of transmission, with Stanley's voice and end credits confirming her involvement.
Karen's Warning to Chelsea
In the episode, Chelsea Fox contacted Karen to inquire about Gray Atkins' grandmother, Sheila. Karen's daughter Chantelle was Gray's wife, and Gray murdered her; Karen now cares for their children. Before Gray's crimes were exposed, he moved on with Chelsea, and they have a son named Jordan. Chelsea heard that Karen was reluctant to let Sheila into her grandchildren's lives and wanted to know why.
When Chelsea called, she reached Karen's voicemail and left a message. Karen later returned the call, but Jordan answered the phone while playing a game. Distracted, he did not inform Chelsea of the call. Karen's voice was heard warning Chelsea against Sheila, suggesting that letting Sheila into their lives would effectively allow Gray back in, along with other comments.
Fans Suspect Sheila's Motive
Chelsea never received the warning and later met with Sheila, agreeing to let her meet Jordan. Fans now believe Karen was right about Sheila, suspecting she is still in contact with Gray despite her denials. They think Sheila's involvement will lead to Gray's return to the show, with Sheila acting as his motivation for reconnecting.
Fans expressed delight at Karen's brief return and hope for a full comeback. One fan said: "This in 2026 and it only being temporary is tragic to me. Lorraine Stanley’s departure from the show was not one of Clenshaw’s best decisions and Ben Wadey has the chance to fix it." A fourth fan commented: "They are definitely bringing Karen back at some point in the story. She'll possibly come back and have a standoff with Sheila and this is where Chelsea finds out the truth about her being close to Gray. They wouldn't have Karen on the phone only for her not to appear."
