EastEnders fans distracted by Zoe funeral song

EastEnders viewers were left distracted during Zoe Slater's funeral after noticing the song choice. Zoe (Michelle Ryan) was killed off in September following her comeback to the BBC One soap last year.

As fans will recall, Zoe suffered a head injury after falling and hitting her head. Moments before, she was trying to retrieve her grandfather Charlie Slater's (Derek Martin) black cab, but Zoe turned and ran, and ended up tripping and landing on a pile of concrete.

Her mum Kat (Jessie Wallace) insisted that she should get checked out after realising she was injured, but Zoe said she was fine and promised she would go the following day. Tragically, she died before morning came, and Kat discovered her lifeless body in bed, leaving her heartbroken and devastated. The rest of the Slater clan then found out about Zoe's death.

Funeral scenes air with emotional tributes

In Wednesday's episode (October 28), Zoe's funeral took place in emotional scenes. At the church, her loved ones gathered, and family members like Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) and Zoe's son Josh Goodwin (Joshua Vaughan) carried in the coffin.

However, fans at home couldn't help but get distracted by the song choice for Zoe's entrance being Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol.

On an EastEnders Facebook fan page, one person said: “Chasing Cars as an entrance song? Bit strange, seeing as if she wasn't chasing cars (cabs) in the first place, she wouldn't be dead!”

Viewers point out irony of song choice

Meanwhile on X, someone else wrote: “The way they picked Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol as Zoe's funeral song when Zoe was literally chasing a taxi before she died. You can't make this up.”

A third also penned: “Chasing cars is what got her in the end.” Another fan wrote: “Is Ben Wadey having a bloody good laugh choosing Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol, as the processional music at Zoe's funeral? Wasn't the injury she sustained while stealing Charlie's taxi the catalyst for her cause of death?!”

Last month, Zoe star Michelle Ryan spoke to Radio Times and confirmed it was a mutual decision to leave EastEnders. She said that she agreed with bosses making Zoe's exit so final.

She shared: "My agent and I sort of discussed from the outset that it would be a year. It just seemed like a natural conclusion for her to die, because for her to run away again would have gone against everything she'd fought for. As sad as it was to hear Zoe was going to be killed off, I was like, ‘I completely understand that.’"

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One.
