EastEnders fans are convinced that a recent scene featuring Amy Mitchell (Ellie Dadd) looking through a photo album of her mother Roxy (Rita Simons) and aunt Ronnie (Samantha Womack) is a clue that the beloved characters will return to Walford, despite having died a decade ago.
The speculation began after the New Year's Day flashforward episode on 1 January 2027, which marked the 10th anniversary of Ronnie and Roxy's deaths. In that episode, Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) appeared heartbroken, leading fans to believe he was reminiscing about his late wife Ronnie. Now, with Amy's emotional scene, viewers are even more convinced that a return is imminent.
Fans React to Amy's Photo Album Scene
During Monday's episode, Amy was seen flipping through old photographs of her mother and aunt, prompting a flurry of fan theories on social media. One fan noted the timing: "Today's episode is revolving around Bea faking her death and Amy is suddenly looking at photos of Ronnie and Roxy. Oh they loom." Another pointed out that Rita Simons and Samantha Womack have been posting about each other frequently online, suggesting they might be working together again.
A third fan declared they would "give anything" for the Mitchell sisters to return, while a fourth added: "10 years since their deaths this coming NYD, it would only be right!"
The Original Death Scene and Fan Backlash
Ronnie and Roxy last appeared on EastEnders on 1 January 2017. On that day, Ronnie married Jack, the love of her life, but later headed to a hotel pool with her sister. Roxy jumped into the pool and passed out, and Ronnie jumped in to save her but became tangled in her dress and veil. Both drowned.
The decision to kill off the characters has been widely criticised by fans, with many calling it the "worst" mistake in the soap's history. One fan wrote: "If I had a time machine, I'd make sure R&R (plus Pat and Tiffany) were never killed off."
History of Resurrections on EastEnders
While some viewers argue that bringing Ronnie and Roxy back would be "ridiculous" since their bodies were shown, others are willing to overlook plot holes. EastEnders has a long history of characters returning from the dead. Kathy Beale was presumed dead in a car crash in 2006 but returned in 2015. Grant Mitchell was thought to have died after a car accident but later turned up in Rio de Janeiro. Cindy Beale also returned from the dead after faking her death while in prison.
Perhaps the most famous example is Den Watts, who was thought dead after being shot and falling into a canal in 1989, only to return to the Queen Vic 14 years later.
What's Next for Amy Mitchell?
Amy's storyline has been building for months, and her recent interest in her mother's past could be setting the stage for a major revelation. Whether Ronnie and Roxy will actually return remains to be seen, but fans are hopeful that the 10th anniversary of their deaths will bring them back to Albert Square.
