Netflix has added the critically acclaimed 2016 film '20th Century Women' to its UK library, available from Friday, 3rd April. Directed by Mike Mills, the film is widely regarded as one of the finest of the 2010s and a considerably underrated treasure.
The story follows 15-year-old Jamie Fields (Lucas Jade Zumann), who lives with his single mother Dorothea (Annette Bening) and two lodgers: Abbie Porter (Greta Gerwig), a young photographer being treated for cervical cancer, and handyman William (Billy Crudup). Elle Fanning plays Jamie's close friend Julie, who hesitates to act on their feelings for fear of ruining their friendship.
Drawing from Mills' own upbringing, the film serves as a heartfelt 'love letter' to the women who shaped him. Annette Bening's performance has been widely praised, with one Reddit user calling it 'one of my favourite performances of the decade'. Another viewer commented: 'Annette Bening should have won her Oscar for this one as it's one of the all time great performances.'
Fanning and Gerwig also receive acclaim for their roles. A 10/10 IMDb review described Fanning as 'a treasure' and Gerwig as 'fabulous'.
