Coronation Street fans are predicting a soap legend's return after Adam Barlow and Alya Nazir got engaged this week. Viewers have suggested that Alya's grandmother Yasmeen (Shelley King) and Adam's uncle Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) could make a comeback to help celebrate the couple's upcoming wedding.
Engagement at the Rovers
The beloved soap couple, played by Sam Robertson and Sair Khan, first struck up a romance in 2024. They had to put their relationship on hold when Alya left for a job in Ireland. In real life, actress Sair Khan went on maternity leave and welcomed her first child.
A few months later, Alya returned to the cobbles and she and Adam rekindled things, even moving in with each other. This week, the pair took the next step in their relationship when Adam popped the question at the Rovers surrounded by his fellow neighbours.
As Adam got down on one knee, the entire pub went silent. A smitten Alya said yes as the whole pub cheered, with Adam declaring: "The next round is on me."
Fans call for character comebacks
Writing on a Coronation Street Facebook fan page, viewers suggested Yasmeen and Peter could return for the special day. "Yasmeen should definitely come back for Alya's wedding," said one person. Someone else added: "I thought that." A third chimed in: "What about Peter too?" Another viewer declared: "Oh 100% it's about time he comes back we miss him!!"
Yasmeen was last seen on the soap in March 2025. She made her debut in 2014 and ended up leaving for a new job at a charity in London. Peter Barlow, meanwhile, was born on-screen in 1965 and played a part in a ton of dramatic soap moments.
He left Weatherfield in December 2023 for a fresh start in Spain after he struggled with his mental health after accidentally running over and killing serial killer Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce). His marriage to Carla Connor (Alison King) was also breaking down, so Carla bought him a one-way ticket to Spain.
