Coronation Street is set to air a special episode dedicated to Debbie Webster and her friendship group on Monday. The ITV soap has been exploring an emotional storyline after Debbie was diagnosed with early onset dementia, and fans have been praising actress Sue Devaney for her portrayal of the condition.
Special Episode Focuses on Debbie's Angels
Monday's episode will move away from the usual everyday running of the cobbles to a special broadcast for "Debbie's Angels," shining a light on the women of Weatherfield. Abi, Bernie, Christina, Sally and Glenda will gather at Debbie's flat to help with a birthday surprise for Carl.
Debbie empties a plastic crate onto the carpet to reveal hundreds of photographs taken over the years and explains that she needs their help to make a photo book for Carl's 40th birthday. What starts as a fun bonding experience quickly descends into chaos as past tensions surface among the women.
Emotional Confrontations and Uniting
Amid the heated confrontations regarding family history and past trauma, the group struggles to keep the celebration afloat. While some find solace in confiding in one another about their own personal burdens, others face difficult decisions about their futures.
By the end of the evening the air is cleared, and the women unite to move forward, though several of them are left to navigate significant, life-altering choices in private.
Producer on the Importance of Female Friendships
Producer Kate Brooks believes it's important to keep the legacy of female friendships alive on Coronation Street. Speaking to the ECHO and other press, she said: "What makes Coronation Street so special are these really strong, funny, complicated, messy Northern women who you know and love."
"When you look back at the women over the course of 66 years, every single era has got these standout characters that are the driving force." Speaking about the special episode on Monday, Kate said: "I love this episode so much because each individual character is going through so much, they've got their own trauma and issues going on, but the friendship and the laughter is the thread that keeps them together."
The producer wanted to bring all the storylines into one episode to showcase the "electric" bond between the women. She said: "I wanted to dedicate a whole episode to these women and these stories. No stunts, it's just about their relationship and what it's like being in a female friendship group."
