Stephen King's classic horror story Carrie has been reimagined for a modern audience, and the new series on Prime Video is winning over viewers and critics alike. The show, which dropped earlier this month, has been praised for its fresh take on the 1976 film, with many viewers admitting they binge-watched all eight episodes in one sitting.
Viewers surprised by their enjoyment
Despite initial scepticism about a remake of such an iconic film, audiences have been pleasantly surprised. One viewer wrote: "I was surprised how much I liked this! I think the lead actress did a great job and it's been updated and expanded in ways I think work really well." Another added: "Loved the series. Watched in one sitting until 2am."
A third viewer, who saw the original movie with Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie in 1976, said: "I've watched all eight episodes and found it generally better than the movie. Obviously modernised with the mobile phone use and Instagram bullying, but there was a much better buildup to what caused the 'meltdown' at prom. Overall a very enjoyable remake."
What the new Carrie is about
In King's first published novel, Carrie White is a shy and friendless 16-year-old who is bullied at school and abused at home by her religious fanatic mother. When she discovers she has supernatural powers, she takes revenge. The new version updates the story with modern technology, with bullying spilling over to social media.
Some viewers have expressed disappointment or anger over the changes, particularly the ending. However, the alterations had King's approval, according to showrunner Mike Flanagan, who previously helmed Netflix's The Haunting of Hill House.
"Some people seem animated by trying to protect Stephen King in this, and what I want to say to them is, 'Guys, this is Steve's idea'," Flanagan told Polygon. "Steve believed very much that the story had already been told as he had written it. What excited him and animated him about this was the chance to expand that universe and to open it up into a much broader world."
Critical reception and where to watch
The show is certified fresh with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 85% from critics, while its audience approval score stands at 82%. The critics' consensus reads: "Mike Flanagan aptly expands this teen mythos with added compassion and ingenuity, bringing a modern touch to a timeless work and giving all performers involved the opportunity to shine while witnessing the ascension of a fascinatingly new Carrie."
All eight episodes of the first series are available to stream on Amazon. Standalone Prime Video subscriptions start from £7.99 monthly, while Amazon Prime with Prime Video costs £8.99 monthly or £95 per year.
