Bradley Walsh is set to host a new Channel 4 game show, Million Pound Shot, airing at 9pm on Sunday, November 1, but some viewers are already questioning whether the programme is genuine. The 66-year-old presenter will helm the one-off event, which promises three contestants the chance to win up to £1 million.
Television conspiracy theorist Harry Ford has taken to TikTok to explain why he is "90 per cent certain" the show is not all it seems. "The trailer for this show aired during Taskmaster last week and as soon as it was over, I said that is not going to be a real show... that is going to be some kind of stunt," he said in a video.
Vague Title and Description Raise Suspicions
Harry detailed his "evidence," beginning with the "incredibly vague and generic" title and description of the show. "If you are launching a new quiz show, you need to have a title that immediately tells you what it is - and you need to sum up how the game works," he pointed out. According to Harry, the name Million Pound Shot tells the viewer "nothing. It's as generic as you can get."
He also noted that the description states, "it is a one-off event where three plucky contestants step up for the chance to win up to £1 million," adding: "I would already say that is suspiciously vague - why if they were launching a brand new quiz event would they not tell you anything about it?" Harry also pointed to parts of the description that "promises a night of drama" unlike anything Bradley has presented before, along with a "bursting with tension" comment and a "curveball the audience won't see coming."
Unusual Commissioning and Timing
Harry expressed confusion over the show being a "one-off," noting that he cannot recall previous instances of sole editions of this format. "Usually quizzes are commissioned for a handful of shows," he said. He also highlighted the Sunday night 9pm slot as "quite an unusual time to launch a big, new quiz event" and questioned when Channel 4 last commissioned a mainstream quiz show.
Considering Bradley's reputation as a "big BBC host" and a "big prime time" ITV presenter, Harry asked whether Bradley has ever done Channel 4 before. "I don't think he has. He doesn't feel very Channel 4 in any way," he said, suggesting Bradley may be fronting the show because he is "so ubiquitous with game shows and light entertainment that people will be surprised when this turns out to be something completely different."
Commissioner's Track Record and Fan Theories
Harry also detailed the commissioner of Million Pound Shot, Tim Hancock, describing him as someone "into very 'stunty', outrageous, headline-grabbing commissions." He cited Hancock's "most famous" commission as Gregg Wallace: The British Miracle Meat, a "bizarre satirical, sort of scripted documentary" in which Gregg Wallace learned about "harvesting human meat." Harry said the show "was sold to the public as a real documentary and played completely straight - it was only when it aired that people realised it was a hoax."
Harry concluded: "I am certain that is what is going to happen here. I think the vague title, the vague description, Bradley Walsh hosting on Channel 4, a one-off quiz event at 9pm the day after Halloween, commissioned by a man who loves 'stunty' headline-grabby commissions... I think this is going to be something scripted."
In response, one TikTok user suggested Derren Brown might run an experiment to see if people will willingly shoot someone for money because an authority figure tells them to. Another predicted a Black Mirror-type scenario where a contestant has to shoot someone for £1 million. A third noted that Channel 4 confirmed in February that Derren Brown would have a new show called 'Incognito' but nothing further has been announced. A fourth viewer pointed out that the post-watershed slot insinuates content not suitable for children, unlike most quiz shows.
Channel 4 has been invited to respond.
