Bradley Walsh warns viewers as Million Pound Shot twist revealed

Bradley Walsh announced a major twist during his new Channel 4 show, Million Pound Shot, revealing that the entire programme was a performance designed to expose the techniques used by the gambling industry to manipulate its customers.

The show, initially billed as a groundbreaking, post-watershed live quiz show, saw contestants risk their own real money via chip-and-pin machines on their lecterns to chase a £1 million jackpot. During Sunday's episode (November 1), participants wagered money based on their confidence in responding to general knowledge questions. Accurate answers earned bet balls that held cash value, which players could either withdraw or gamble by launching them into the Million Pound Shot machine in a bid to claim £1 million.

Viewers introduced to three players

Viewers were introduced to Helen, Reece, and Mark, who had opted to gamble £1,500, £1,700 and £1,000 of their own funds, respectively. As Reece subsequently found himself £6,000 in deficit, an irate audience member was heard shouting: "The concept of this is disgusting."

The footage cut out, before Bradley returned to the studio to explain: "What you've just witnessed wasn't all that it seemed. The whole thing was a performance... Everything you've seen tonight draws on the techniques used by the gambling industry to manipulate its customers." The character of Reece was based on a real man called Patrick, who subsequently revealed his experience.

Warning to audiences

Bradley delivered a warning to audiences, stating: "I should warn you that what we're about to explore may be difficult and upsetting for some viewers. Because, like any addiction, gambling can cause serious harm."

The programme swiftly left audiences split. "The most obvious fake show I've ever seen," one person wrote on X. Another added: "This makes zero sense at all." A third said: "How absolutely ridiculous." Someone else commented: "Bradley Walsh and Channel 4 presenting an anti-gambling stunt is prob the strangest TV ep I've ever seen."

Mixed reactions from viewers

Meanwhile, other audiences commended the show for highlighting awareness of gambling. "Well played C4. A subject that needs airtime," someone wrote. Another added: "#MillionPoundShot had me frighteningly uncomfortable with the idea of a national broadcaster normalising people gambling/losing huge, unaffordable, life-changing money. It seemed so stupidly irresponsible. Thank god for that twist. A hugely important message." A third said: "Kudos to Brad and those involved for highlighting the seriousness of gambling advertising and addiction."

Expressing his views on the show, Bradley previously commented: "This programme is unlike anything we've seen on British TV before. And when I heard about this format, I thought it was one of the most original and surprising quiz shows I'd ever encountered. Alongside playing with their own money, there are more twists and turns along the way. I'm excited for everyone to see how it plays out."
