Helena Bonham Carter's replacement in The White Lotus has been confirmed, following her abrupt departure from the HBO series just one week after filming began. Oscar-winning actress Laura Dern has been cast to fill the gap left by Bonham Carter.

Laura Dern, an A-list star and Academy Award winner, joins the show after Bonham Carter's sudden exit at the end of last week. According to HBO, Dern will not portray the same character originally intended for Bonham Carter; instead, she is taking on a new role, details of which are being kept under wraps.
HBO's Statement
On 24 April, HBO released a statement: "With filming just underway on season four of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set. The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks. HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won't get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon."
Laura Dern's Background
Showrunner Mike White and Laura Dern have a history of collaboration. They previously worked together on the HBO series Enlightened and the film Year of the Dog. Dern also had a voice cameo in the second season of The White Lotus. She earned an Emmy nomination for her performance in Enlightened and has been nominated for Palm Royale, The Tale, and Big Little Lies, winning the Emmy for supporting actress for the latter. Additionally, Dern is a three-time Oscar nominee, winning best supporting actress in 2020 for her role as a divorce lawyer in Marriage Story.

Helena Bonham Carter is a multi-Emmy nominee with five nods, including two for The Crown as Princess Margaret, and nominations for Merlin, Live from Baghdad, and Burton and Taylor.
