Nearly two decades after her first appearance, Billie Piper made a stunning return to Doctor Who in Saturday's season finale, 'The Reality War'. The 42-year-old actor, best known for playing companion Rose Tyler in the 2005 revival, appeared in the final scene after Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor regenerated, greeting viewers with a cheerful 'oh Hello!'.
The return came as a genuine shock to fans, with the BBC successfully avoiding leaks. TV critic Scott Bryan described it as a 'pitch to Disney' to renew the show, amid speculation about its future. Viewing figures have dipped, with two episodes in May attracting less than 3 million viewers, the lowest since 2005.
Tony Jordan, coordinator of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society, expressed concern: 'If it had been a stellar success, they would have recommissioned it already.' The BBC has denied the show faces cancellation but said a decision awaits after the current series airs.
Whether Piper plays the Doctor, Rose, or another character remains unclear. The credits listed Gatwa and Jodie Whittaker as 'the Doctor' but not Piper. Christopher Eccleston, who starred alongside Piper, previously backed her as a potential Doctor.
Fan reactions were mixed. Dan McLaughlin, watching at a Manchester cinema, noted 'an audible gasp' and cheers, but felt 'deflated', saying the show lacks original ideas. Bryan called Piper 'fantastic' but added the mystery of her role leaves 'more questions than answers'.
