Tipping Point host Ben Shephard has been described as a 'gentleman' by former contestants, who have shared behind-the-scenes insights into the popular ITV quiz show. The programme, which has been on air since 2012, sees players answer questions to drop coins into a machine for cash prizes, with a jackpot of £10,000.
Luke Robins, who filmed his episode three years ago, took to X to thank Shephard for his kindness during a difficult time. He wrote: 'The cat is finally out of the bag. Three years ago, I filmed an episode of #tippingpoint. Thoroughly enjoyed it, to think where I was then mentally as well.' He added: '@Benshephard was a gentleman to us all.' Shephard replied: 'Was great to have to take on our machine Luke, really glad you enjoyed it despite things not going your way!'
Another contestant, Ellie Millar, shared her experience on TikTok after filming in May 2022. She said: 'He was the nicest, nicest man, he was lovely. You know how people say you see them on TV and when you meet them they're not all that, he was all that and more.' She added that Shephard helped calm nervous contestants and made the experience fun.
In 2019, Shephard revealed that the machine operates on a 'complicated system' run by the gallery, which prevents it from being taken on the road. He also noted a person behind the machine ensures the hydraulics and hoppers work correctly.
However, former contestant Tony Fillingham disclosed a surprising detail: the drop button contestants press is a decoy. He told OLBG.com: 'There’s a woman standing behind the machine, wearing those gloves, watching you. When you press the button, she’s the one who actually drops the coin.' He added that contestants have no control over timing, as it is all down to the woman behind the machine.
