'Masterpiece' BBC Period Drama Based on Book So Good You Can Forget Miss Austen
BBC's 'The Pursuit of Love' Wows Fans 5 Years After Release

More than 80 years after the novel's release, a BBC period drama based on the best-selling book has fans 'completely hooked.' The 2021 adaptation of The Pursuit of Love, starring Hollywood starlet Lily James, is a romantic comedy series written and directed by Emily Mortimer. Adapted from Nancy Mitford's 1945 novel, the show follows the wild adventures, romances, and diverging paths of two cousins growing up in Europe between the two World Wars.

Plot and Setting

Set in the 1930s and 1940s, the story centres on the charismatic, fearless Linda Radlett and her best friend and cousin, Fanny Logan (played by Emily Beecham). Raised in the oppressive and eccentric household of her father, Uncle Mathew (Dominic West), Linda longs to escape the English countryside and is consumed by an intense, romantic desire for love and marriage. In contrast, Fanny—who was abandoned by her bohemian mother—craves stability, comfort, and a steady life.

Themes and Production

The series explores themes of women's freedom and independence, different forms of love, and the mystery of the human heart. Filmed in Bristol, Bath, and Somerset, the three-part series captures the love and whimsy needed in every good British rom-com. The cast also includes Andrew Scott as Lord Merlin, a fan-favourite character.

Fan Reactions

Despite first airing five years ago, the series is still adored by viewers. One fan gushed: 'I loved this. The soundtrack, cinematography & acting are all spot on. I found the main character played by Lily so very ALIVE, and the final act has lived with me ever since I watched it... which was actually a few years ago now, which just goes to show how much this series lives in my heart.' Another agreed: 'Lord Merlin was fantastic. Lily James put on a delightful performance in this charming period piece.' A third echoed: 'This show perfectly captured the tone of the novel. Many of the standout scenes were just how I had envisioned them while reading the book. Lily James perfectly captures Linda and all her "light." Move over, Miss Austen, there's a new period drama in town.' Some viewers begged BBC producers for more, pleading: 'I genuinely enjoyed it all. The eccentricities, visuals and weirdness. I felt so many highs and lows of emotion during this series (just like Linda). Wish there was more!'
