The BBC has announced a new YouTube spin-off series from the award-winning comedy Smoggie Queens, titled The Dickie Show. The digital-first chat show stars Phil Dunning as drag queen Dickie, who interviews celebrity guests in a makeshift studio set up in the back of his mother's garage.
Created and produced by Hat Trick Productions, the series sees Dickie joined by his friends—drag mother Mam (Mark Benton), stylish Lucinda (Alexandra Mardell), musical Sal (Patsy Lowe) and helper Stewart (Elijah Young)—who cause chaos rather than assist. Celebrity guests include Rylan, Siobhan McSweeney, Dr Ranj, James Acaster, Vanessa Feltz, Steph McGovern and Russell T Davies.
Jon Petrie, BBC Director of Comedy, said: 'As we continue to experiment with comedy on YouTube, we’re sending Dickie off to show Claudia Winkleman exactly how not to do it in The Dickie Show. The real test of a great comedy character is whether you can throw them into a completely new world and they still make you laugh.'
Phil Dunning, writer, creator and star, added: 'Giving Dickie his own chat show is crazy behaviour from the BBC. Apologies in advance to all the celebrities he will inevitably offend.'
Episode one, featuring Rylan, is available now on BBC YouTube and iPlayer. The first half of the series will air weekly, with the second half continuing from the end of May. Series two of Smoggie Queens returns to BBC iPlayer and BBC Three in May.
