The BBC has provided a major update on the future of Doctor Who just weeks after it was confirmed the planned 2026 Christmas special was axed. Director-general Matt Brittin said the corporation is 'working hard' on regenerating the iconic sci-fi series, which will be put out to competitive tender for other platforms to produce.
Recent Setbacks for the Show
Doctor Who fans have faced a series of disappointments. The 2026 Christmas special was cancelled for the second year in a row, and screenwriter Russell T Davies, who rebooted the programme in 2005, left the series last month. Lead actor Ncuti Gatwa stepped away after just two seasons, with his final episode showing the Doctor regenerating into Billie Piper, who previously played the Doctor's companion, though it remains unconfirmed if she will take over the role.
Fans have been without new episodes for over a year, following the end of the streaming partnership between Disney and the BBC. The show's future has been uncertain, with no clear indication of who the current Doctor is.
BBC's Plans for Regeneration
Speaking ahead of the release of the BBC's 2026 annual report, Matt Brittin said: 'On Doctor Who, we've said actually that we're going out to tender. That's a show that has regenerated multiple times in its 60-plus year history, and we'll do so again.' He added: 'I think that's one of the great things about the 100-year history of the BBC, we can do that, and we can creatively renew content and shows that people love, and we'll be working hard on that right now.'
The 2026 Christmas special was due to be written by Davies and produced by Bad Wolf. A BBC spokesperson confirmed the cancellation, stating: 'After careful consideration the BBC, Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf have collectively decided not to go ahead with the previously announced Doctor Who Christmas episode. This decision was not taken lightly, and we know it will be disappointing for fans, but in order to set the show up for future series, it was decided that rather than bridge the gap with a one-off special, we are choosing to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show.'
Davies on the Show's Future
When announcing his departure, Davies said Doctor Who's future is 'unpredictable and new' and he was 'excited to see what comes next'. He explained: 'There won't be a Christmas special – we only cooked that up to guarantee a future when no-one knew what would happen, but now we do know, there's no need for it. You'll have to wait a bit longer for new Doctor Who… but you'll be waiting for more Doctor Who than a one-off. So it's worth it.'
What's Next for Fans
Despite the setbacks, there is some positive news. An animated series of Doctor Who is currently in production and will air on CBeebies. However, it appears likely that it will be a lengthy period before live-action adventures in the TARDIS return.
