The BBC has unveiled a first-look trailer for its upcoming psychological thriller The Rapture, an adaptation of Liz Jensen's bestselling novel that promises to "crackle with danger." The series stars Ruth Madeley, India Amarteifio, and Ruth Jones, known for Gavin and Stacey.
Plot and Characters
The story follows forensic psychologist Gabs Fox, played by Ruth Madeley, who works at a high-security psychiatric hospital. There, she meets 17-year-old Bethany, portrayed by India Amarteifio, a teenager convicted of murdering her mother but who claims she is innocent. Bethany insists she can predict natural disasters and tells Gabs: "We are all here to find the truth."
A synopsis adds: "Bethany was convicted of murdering her mother but claims she is innocent. She is estranged from her father Leonard (played by Sam Hazeldine), who is the charismatic leader of an influential religious movement. Bethany tells Gabs that she has psychic powers and can predict the future - but what will it take for Gabs to believe her? And if Bethany didn’t kill her mother, then who did?"
Cast and Production
The series, filmed in Wales, also features Stephen Campbell Moore from The History Boys, Lisa Palfrey from Sex Education, and Siena Kelly from Black Mirror. Robert Rhodes, known for 28 Years Later and House of the Dragon, joins the cast as well.
Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, said: "This thriller brings Liz Jensen’s compelling novel to life with a truly talented cast led by the brilliant Ruth Madeley and India Amarteifio. The Rapture features two complicated and captivating characters, blended with a story of climate change, to create a gripping narrative and I can’t wait for BBC viewers to see it."
Rebecca Durbin, series executive producer for Mammoth Screen, added: "The Rapture is a hugely powerful and entertaining female-led drama, which is charged with timely, important and deeply resonant themes. The chemistry between Ruth and India is utterly compelling and their passion for the project is unrivalled - we cannot wait to bring it to the screen alongside the BBC and Creative Wales thanks to this phenomenal cast!"
Release Details
The Rapture will air on BBC iPlayer and BBC One. A specific release date has not yet been announced, but the trailer indicates the series is coming soon.
