BBC faces 206 Strictly complaints over blurred slogan

The BBC has received more than 200 complaints after a t-shirt slogan worn by Strictly Come Dancing contestant Bethany Antonia was edited out during a recent episode, prompting accusations of censorship.

During the show, a clip showed Bethany wearing a top with the words "PROTECT THE DOLLS" written on it during rehearsals. Later in the same episode, the words had been removed.

Pro-trans slogan sparks backlash

The phrase "Protect The Dolls" is a pro-trans slogan that first appeared on a top designed by fashion designer Conner Ives in 2025. At the time, fans were angered by the editing.

It has now emerged that the BBC received 206 complaints from individuals about the situation.

Fans and BBC respond

Angry viewers reacted at the time, with one complaint saying: "After posting a video, the BBC quietly replaced it with a new one that doesn’t show her from the front. During the show, they actually blurred out the T-Shirt completely. Absolutely despicable."

A BBC spokesperson responded: "As is standard practice on any entertainment show on the BBC and in line with our editorial guidelines, appropriate steps are taken to reduce the inclusion of any overt branding or slogans that may be present, regardless of the wording or statement in question."

The incident has drawn significant attention, with the complaints figure now confirmed as the broadcaster faces continued scrutiny over its handling of the slogan.
