The 2026 World Cup is underway, and UK viewers face a familiar choice between BBC and ITV coverage. Early signs indicate many favor ITV this year, following several notable changes by the BBC.
BBC Axes World Cup Highlights Show
Contrary to recent tournaments like Euro 2024, the BBC has decided against airing a daily highlights program on its main TV channels. This marks a major break from traditional terrestrial broadcasting, leaving viewers without a regular late-night roundup on BBC One.
BBC bosses reject claims of reduced coverage, citing scheduling demands and time zone challenges. A BBC statement said: "BBC Sport is producing highlights from every single match... Catch all the post-match reaction and highlights on BBC iPlayer, or dive in via the BBC Sport website and app." The broadcaster argues that a fixed TV slot is unsuitable for matches played late at night or early hours in the UK due to North American kick-off times.
Gary Lineker's Departure
Another major change is the absence of veteran presenter Gary Lineker, who left the BBC last year after public disputes over social media activity and impartiality concerns. His exit was hastened by allegations of antisemitism. Gabby Logan, Kelly Cates, and Mark Chapman now share hosting duties, similar to the Match of the Day arrangement. For many viewers, Lineker's absence marks the end of an era.
No Studio Presence in North America
The BBC has also opted not to build a physical studio at the tournament. Instead, coverage is presented from its Salford headquarters using virtual production technology with green-screen environments. This cost-saving approach has drawn criticism for lacking atmosphere. In contrast, ITV has a substantial studio in Brooklyn with real New York skyline views, which critics argue better reflects the tournament's prestige.
