Bake Off Makes Unprecedented Move with Dual Star Bakers
In a historic first for the Great British Bake Off's 16-year run, judges Paul Hollywood and Cherish Finden crowned two Star Bakers during Sunday's Stand Up To Cancer celebrity special. Former TOWIE star Mark Wright and Sugababes singer Mutya Buena shared the coveted title after impressing in all three challenges, marking a unique departure from the show's single-winner tradition.
Celebrity Bakers Face Technical Trials
The celebrity contestants, including actor Ralf Little, comedian Emmett J Scanlan, and YouTuber Nella Rose, faced a demanding schedule of baking challenges. The competition began with a two-hour technical test requiring pull-apart savoury rolls made from yeasted bread dough. Remarkably, Mark Wright confessed to having no prior baking experience, stating: "I've never baked. Not even a cupcake in my life."
Mutya Buena crafted cheese, garlic, and spinach rolls with a generous chilli kick, while Mark prepared Spanish-inspired rolls, acknowledging the pressure of following his wife Michelle Keegan's previous Star Baker achievement.
Showstopper Cakes Reveal Extravagant Purchases
For the vegan fruit tart technical challenge, celebrities demonstrated their pastry skills before moving to the showstopper round. This required creating cakes representing their most ridiculous purchases. Mark Wright constructed a swimming pool cake, reflecting his expensive home addition that he described as "pointless" and "too expensive to heat." His Victoria sponge with homemade jam and buttercream filling earned praise despite minor graininess in the buttercream.
Mutya impressed with a vinyl-inspired orange zest and almond cake, receiving Cherish Finden's enthusiastic "Va Va Voom" approval for its airy, light, and moist texture. Ralf Little baked a Rolex watch cake recounting its theft from his bedside, while Nella Rose's bling ring cake made from red velvet and cream frosting featured piping work Paul Hollywood deemed "pretty good."
Judges Break Tradition for Charity Cause
Host Noel Fielding announced the unprecedented dual victory, stating: "Something weird has happened, this has never happened before in Celeb Bake Off history." Paul Hollywood explained the decision: "We've never had two Star Bakers in 16 years. This is unique. It's a privilege, so we thought 'give it to the two of them'—it's for Stand Up To Cancer. It's all good."
Mark Wright's participation held personal significance, having been affected by prostate cancer in his family and undergoing a 12cm tumour removal in 2021 after a sarcoma scare. He has since advocated for regular health checks.
Channel 4 Addresses Scott Mills Episode Controversy
The historic episode aired amid controversy surrounding another celebrity baker. Channel 4 announced it would not broadcast Scott Mills' episode of The Great Celebrity Bake Off For Stand Up To Cancer, citing "careful consideration of the circumstances" following allegations of serious sexual offences from 1997-2000, which were dropped due to insufficient evidence seven years ago.
The network stated: "Acknowledging the seriousness of the accusations that have been made against Scott, we don't believe it would be appropriate to air the episode at this time. An alternative episode of Celebrity GBBO will go out in its place." This decision came after Mills was recently dismissed from the BBC, six days after his final Radio 2 breakfast show.
