Ashley Walters has finally revealed who killed Sully in the Top Boy finale, confirming that Jaq, played by Jasmine Jobson, was responsible for the character's death.
During an appearance on the podcast re:WORKING with Tim Campbell, Walters, who portrayed Dushane Hill in the Channel 4 and Netflix series, answered the question that has puzzled fans since the show's cliffhanger ending in 2013. When responding to another question from the presenter, he said Jaq was "the answer to your other question you keep on asking."
The Decision to Keep the Killer a Mystery
When host Campbell asked what question he was referring to, Walters responded: "Bro, that is the biggest question," before explaining: "It was me and Kane [Robinson] that made the ending that way, because they had the whole killing and we went in the edit and we was like, 'Nah, don't tell people who did it, cut it out, who did it'."
Keen to find a way for the show to live on in people's minds, the decision was made to keep the culprit a mystery. Walters added: "It's the most asked question now. But yeah, Jaq," he confirmed, according to the Mirror.
Why Jaq Had Motive to Kill Sully
Jaq and Sully experienced turbulent moments after Sully's stash of substances disappeared, with Jaq taking 25 kilos in hopes of securing funds to begin a fresh life with her nephew. She ultimately abandoned the scheme and attempted to return the stash before Dushane intercepted the handover.
Jaq had always been a plausible murder suspect given she understood Sully would eventually kill her, and she also sought vengeance after Sully ordered the killing of her closest friend, Kieron Palmer (Joshua Blissett).
Fans React to the Revelation and Upcoming Spin-offs
Netflix recently announced fans would receive two new spin-off programmes, one with the provisional title Jaq, which will centre on the titular character, with Jobson returning to the role. Whether the spin-off will open with Jaq's killing of Sully remains unconfirmed.
The other spin-off is Jonny Boy, a five-episode series penned by Ronan Bennett, who developed the original programme. The show will see Barry Keoghan reprise his role as Jonny McGee, one of the principal antagonists in series five.
Viewers flocked to X, formerly Twitter, to voice their reactions to the Sully revelation, with many insisting they'd already worked out that Jaq was responsible for the killing. One wrote: "I think it was obvious that it was Jaq and since they're giving us a Jaq spin-off, I hope they go into that there."
Another concurred: "So obvious when we heard they're doing a Top Boy spin-off with Jaq as the main character." A third remarked: "Everyone knew that already, it was her walk." While a fourth posted: "Most people already knew I think, it was pretty obvious."
Sharp-eyed viewers had been certain throughout, with one highlighting: "If you freeze after Sully is shot, you can see Jaq." A final viewer noted: "Camo hoodie = Jaq, thought that was common knowledge for people that watched the show."
Audiences will need to wait and discover whether the Jaq spin-off explores Sully's death, and it is yet to be confirmed when the highly anticipated spin-off shows will air.
