Anne Hegerty doubles down on Charlie Kirk comments amid backlash

Anne Hegerty, best known for her role on The Chase, has hit back at critics after facing backlash over her comments following the death of American activist Charlie Kirk. The 31-year-old was shot dead at a debate in Utah last week.

Hegerty initially wrote on social media that she had never heard of Kirk before his death, adding: 'Had we met, my end of the conversation would have been "You just said WHAT?" and "Scuse me, those are my FRIENDS you're talking about."' She also said she joined Bernie Sanders in deploring the murder.

After being criticised for 'stupid and misinformed' posts, Hegerty doubled down, writing: 'I hope Tyler Robinson gets the death penalty IS THAT CLEAR ENOUGH FOR YOU #idiots.' Robinson is the alleged killer who reportedly shot Kirk with a bolt-action rifle from a campus rooftop before handing himself in.

The quiz show star's remarks come amid wider controversy, with US late-night host Jimmy Kimmel having his show pulled from ABC after criticising Republican responses to Kirk's death. Donald Trump praised the decision, calling Kimmel 'zero talent'.
