Alex Kingston, the 62-year-old actress best known for playing River Song in Doctor Who, is set to join the upcoming series of Strictly Come Dancing. She will be partnered with a same-sex dance partner, making history on the show.
Kingston's acting career spans both British and American television, including roles in ER, Arrow, and A Discovery of Witches. She has expressed excitement about participating in Strictly, having previously discussed the possibility with actress Sarah Hadland.
Off-screen, Kingston has experienced significant romantic turmoil. She was married to actor Ralph Fiennes from 1993 until 1995, when he left her for actress Francesca Annis, who was 18 years his senior. Kingston later described feeling 'worthless' after the divorce and admitted to considering suicide.
She later married German author Florian Haertel, with whom she has a daughter, Salome, born in 2001. The couple divorced in 2013. Kingston is now married to TV host Jonathan Stamp, whom she wed in Italy in 2015.
Kingston was diagnosed with uterine cancer last year but has since recovered. Her participation in Strictly Come Dancing marks a new chapter in her life, as she takes to the ballroom floor with her same-sex partner.
