Christine Tremarco, best known for her role in the Netflix series Adolescence, has been added to the cast of the BBC's upcoming Beatles drama Hamburg Days. The six-part series chronicles the band's formative years in Germany, tracing their evolution from a raw young group into the world's most iconic band.
Cast and Characters
Tremarco will portray John Lennon's guardian, Aunt Mimi. She joins previously announced stars including Sex Education's Asa Butterfield, who plays Beatles manager Brian Epstein, and Trainspotting's Jonny Lee Miller, who takes on the role of Sir Paul McCartney's father, Jim McCartney. The cast also features Irish actor Louis McCartney as Sir Ringo Starr, Darci Shaw (A Thousand Blows) as Cynthia Lennon, Ryan Sampson (Mr Bigstuff) as Liverpool promoter Allan Williams, and Jorden Myrie (Sherwood) as music promoter Lord Woodbine.
Earlier casting includes Rhys Mannion as John Lennon, Ellis Murphy as Sir Paul McCartney, Harvey Brett as George Harrison, Louis Landau as original bassist Stu Sutcliffe, and Patrick Gilmore as original drummer Pete Best.
Production and Inspiration
Hamburg Days is inspired by the book of the same name by Beatles associates Klaus Voormann and Astrid Kirchherr. The series will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, though an official release date has not yet been confirmed, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Behind the Series
Sue Deeks, head of scripted pre-buy acquisitions at the BBC, said: “Hamburg Days is the fascinating story of how, in the space of two short years, a raw young band from Liverpool honed their music skills in Hamburg, before returning home to become an overnight worldwide success. It is an incredible story, accompanied (of course) by an amazing soundtrack!”
The Beatles, formed in 1960, remain the best-selling musical act of all time, with 18 UK number one singles and 16 UK number one albums. During their time in Hamburg, they performed at various venues in the St. Pauli district, most notably the Star-Club.
Separately, four films directed by Sir Sam Mendes about the band are in development, starring Paul Mescal as Sir Paul, Barry Keoghan as Sir Ringo, Harris Dickinson as Lennon, and Joseph Quinn as Harrison.
