As the ninth season of ABC's '9-1-1' draws to a close, fans are increasingly concerned about the fate of Athena Grant-Nash, played by Angela Bassett. The finale airs Thursday, May 7 at 8 p.m. EST, following a penultimate episode in which Detective Hooks (Josh Stamberg) shot at Athena during a trafficking arrest.
Speaking on 'Good Morning America' on the morning of the finale, Bassett remained tight-lipped about her character's survival. 'I wish I could say,' she said, adding, 'But Athena is strong.' She noted that Athena's fate 'remains to be seen.'
Showrunner Tim Minear earlier told Decider that he is 'excited and scared' about what will happen to Athena in the final episodes. He teased a 'really thrilling story' that will carry over into the milestone 10th season, which has already been renewed.
The season follows the shocking exit of Peter Krause, whose character Bobby Nash was killed off in season eight. Bassett paid tribute to Krause in an emotional Instagram post in April 2025, writing, 'Peter's Bobby Nash will be missed but his character will never be forgotten.' Co-star Jennifer Love Hewitt also shared a tribute, saying, 'I have no words.'
