With the Peaky Blinders film released earlier this year and a sequel series in development, fans are looking for other gangster dramas to fill the gap. Viewers have recommended three crime series: Boardwalk Empire, House of Guinness, and MobLand.
Boardwalk Empire: A Prohibition-Era Classic
HBO's Boardwalk Empire is set during the Prohibition era, beginning on the day alcohol was banned in 1920. Steve Buscemi stars as "Nucky" Thompson, a corrupt senior politician and Atlantic City's most notorious bootlegger. The show features real-life mobsters, including Al Capone.
The series includes notable actors such as the late Michael K. Williams, Stephen Graham, and Michael Shannon, with Martin Scorsese directing the opening episode. Some viewers consider it superior to Peaky Blinders. One fan commented: "Peaky Blinders has some great scenes - and Cillian Murphy is a captivating leading man. And this might sound like blasphemy on a Peaky Blinders subreddit, but I think Boardwalk Empire is easily the better show overall."
Boardwalk Empire is available on HBO Max, with subscriptions starting from £5.99 a month.
House of Guinness: A Family Epic from the Same Creator
House of Guinness comes from Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders. Set in Dublin in 1868, it follows the four children of the Guinness family patriarch after his death, each with dark secrets, as they control the family's brewery empire.
Viewers have drawn comparisons to Peaky Blinders. One wrote: "It was a little slow to get into, but once you understand the characters it's a solid 7/10 (if Peaky Blinders is 10/10)." Another noted: "The whole vibe of the scenery is certainly familiar, especially the slowed down walks through the factories. This show (HoG) is less violent, had more of an ensemble cast balanced storyline than a single mastermind."
House of Guinness is streaming on Netflix, with plans starting from £7.99 a month.
MobLand: A Modern Crime Dynasty
MobLand, a British drama now in its second series, centres on a criminal dynasty led by patriarch Conrad Harrigan, played by Pierce Brosnan. Peaky Blinders alumnus Tom Hardy stars as Harry Da Souza, the family's fixer. The debut series focuses on the rivalry between the Harrigans and the Stevensons, with Harry working to prevent an all-out war and keep the police away.
A fan of both shows recommended it: "If you like Peaky Blinders, I think you should try MobLand. It's set in modern day but other than that the tone, the intrigue, the scheming, the brutality, all of them remind me very much of what I love about Peaky Blinders."
MobLand is streaming on Paramount+, with plans starting from £5.99 a month.
