The Film's Premise and Success
Speak No Evil, a 2024 English-language remake of the Danish-Dutch film of the same name, has entered Netflix's top ten at number three. The horror film holds an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The story follows Ben and Louise, who befriend a couple named Paddy and Ciara while on holiday in Italy, only to regret accepting an invitation to their home.
Criticism of the Remake
Despite its success, some critics argue the remake was unnecessary. David Renshaw wrote for Fader: 'Speak No Evil is a remake of a film made just two years ago, and threatens to overshadow a genuinely compelling work.' Bleeding Cool described it as a 'toothless' retread that failed to capture the original's terror. Metro's entertainment editor Alicia Adejobi stated: 'It’s disappointing that Hollywood can’t allow this relatively unsung Danish gem to have the space to shine and earn props for its script writing, cinematography and acting.'
Defenders of the Remake
However, the film has its supporters. Katherine McLaughlin wrote in SciFiNow that the movie's 'impressive performances and the specificity in the approach to culture and class sets this remake apart from the original.' Even critic Mark Kermode agreed, saying: 'As a fan of the original, I really think this did it justice and added a new twist and made its own film.'
