Mercy Falls, a Scottish thriller directed by Glasgow-born Ryan Hendrick and starring Outlander's Lauren Lyle, is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. The film, released to cinemas in 2023, combines blood, tension and emotional turmoil against a backdrop of Scottish scenery.
The plot follows a group of friends who travel to the Scottish Highlands in search of a secluded cabin. Filming locations include Mugdock Country Park, Carbeth Huts in Stirling and Aberfeldy, with Scotland's misty atmosphere lending an eerie feel to the production.
Plot and Cast
The synopsis reads: "A group of friends set off into the Scottish Highlands in search of the cabin that Rhona's father has left her. The further they get from civilisation, the closer to danger they get."
Rhona recruits her crush and pals to travel to the fictional town of Mercy Falls to locate her deceased father's old cabin in the woods. The group's journey takes a dangerous turn when they meet the mysterious Clara, who they had earlier declined to give a ride to when she was disguised as a hitchhiker.
Fuelled by childhood trauma, Rhona seeks her inheritance from her estranged father, who left only bloodied memories. As the friends venture deeper into the woods, they begin to unravel, and viewers are left with mounting dread as Clara's dark secret is revealed.
Lauren Lyle, known for playing Marsali MacKimmie Fraser in Outlander, leads the cast as Rhona. She has also featured in ITV's Karen Pirie and BBC's Vigil. Nicolette McKeown plays Clara, with James Watterson and Layla Kirk as Scott and Heather, Joe Rising as Donnie, and Eoin Sweeney as Andy.
Viewer Reception
Mercy Falls holds a 63 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many viewers praising the cinematography and acting. One reviewer said: "A great suspenseful thriller set in beautiful Scottish scenery. Nice camera work including amazing drone footage. And one particular heart wrenching scene across a river gulley will always stick in my mind."
Another added: "Fantastic, well made movie. Cast were great and the reign of terror from Nicolette's Carla just simply rocked the big screen. Lauren's Rhona was amazing too, the two of them simply bounced well off of each other with great chemistry."
A critic noted: "As it is, Mercy Falls has enough tension, emotional turmoil and blood spatter to make it worth a troubled trip to the wild woods." A fourth reviewer offered a mixed take: "A wholesale suspension of disbelief is required to overcome the lapses in logic, but the edgy battle of wits that develops raises this above more derivative horror fare."
