Netflix's new comedy series Minimum Wage has viewers hooked, with many admitting they have already rewatched all available episodes. The show, which landed on the streaming platform today (October 26), is based on a viral online sketch series that accumulated millions of views.
The first 14 episodes of Minimum Wage are now available to stream. The production is inspired by a breakout short-form sketch comedy series of the same name from American High Shorts, a production house that emerged from a disused secondary school in New York, where it filmed most of its content.
From Viral Sketches to Netflix
American High Shorts grew into distributing sketches digitally across platforms including Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. The web series version of Minimum Wage has clocked up millions of views on YouTube alone, with the firm reporting billions of views across all their content and channels.
Netflix has commissioned the workplace comedy for a full series run of 28 episodes in total. It remains unclear whether that will be split into parts or if the remaining episodes will constitute a season 2.
What the Show Is About
Supporters have been told that the new programme will capture the original's distinctive fast-paced, bite-sized format and comedic approach. The series follows a stressed-out group of teenagers as they attempt to run a neighbourhood pizza joint while balancing education, a frenzied employer, and their rock-bottom wages.
The ensemble features Saturday Night Live rising star Grace Reiter and Randall Park, who has previously starred in Fresh Off The Boat and The Office US.
Fan Reactions
Minimum Wage has yet to accumulate sufficient reviews online to achieve a rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but it has already captured viewers' interest. One viewer who anticipated a binge watch shared online: "Absolutely squealin' like a hog for this."
Another viewer who raced through episodes thanks to their compact duration commented: "Perfectly timed jokes well performed by each cast member in episodes with wild and funny plots. I've rewatched this a couple times now, hoping it continues or they create something similar!"
Someone else added: "I can't believe how many times I burst out laughing sometimes it feels like comedy shows don't exist anymore and then you come across something like this and it gives you hope."
Another viewer shared their verdict in a video review, saying: "Some of the episodes really crack me up. You know, side splitting, gut bustingly funny. I couldn't stop laughing out loud and some of the other episodes are just okay, but they are entertaining nonetheless."
The best part is each episode is only 15 minutes short. So, if you come across an episode that doesn't quite tickle your funny bone, don't worry. It'll be over soon before you know it. But I personally think that this group of characters are so irresistibly amusing.
