The Tyler Perry-directed romantic drama, released on Netflix on October 2, has prompted a wave of enthusiastic responses on social media. A TikTok user named Kim shared a clip praising the film as a "10 out of 10," saying in her video: "I cried so much from beginning to end."
Viewers admit to repeat viewings
Comments on the video show the film's strong appeal, with one user writing: "I wish it was longer, a TV show or something. It was so good, I watched it TWICE today." Another replied: "Try up to 4 times, I loved it. I can recite lines now."
The film stars Naomi Baker, Jay Reeves, and Tamberla Perry. It is Perry's seventh project as part of his creative partnership with Netflix, with Angi Bones and Tony L. Strickland serving as producers.
Plot and early reception
Doing Life follows Anika (Naomi Baker), a struggling single mother, and Carousel (Jay Reeves), an incarcerated man nearing the end of his sentence. Their connection begins through heartfelt letters and grows into a deep bond as they help each other seek a second chance and face social judgment.
Since its release, the film has earned a 6.6 out of 10 score on IMDb and a 69% approval rating based on general audience and social media reviews. It drew 9.3 million views in its first three days on Netflix, debuting at no.3 on the global English-language movie chart and reaching no.1 in the US.
Perry on the film's inspiration
Perry spoke about the story's origins, saying: "I was inspired by... the idea that sometimes the people we least expect can understand each other in ways no one else can." He added: "I wanted to tell a story about two people who, on the surface, seem like complete opposites, but who discover a deep commonality in the struggles they're facing."
Doing Life is available to stream on Netflix UK now, with a runtime of 1 hour and 48 minutes.
