Netflix subscribers have reported trouble sleeping after binge-watching Marianne, an eight-part French horror series that one social media film critic has branded the platform's most terrifying show.
Film buff EccyReviews, who rates movies and television shows on social media, has been recommending the series ahead of Halloween. He said: "Honestly, I'll be surprised if you've even heard of it, and I guarantee that you definitely haven't seen it."
What is Marianne about?
The show follows a writer who returns to her hometown only to discover that the evil spirit haunting her dreams is also lurking in real life. Starring Victoire Du Bois, Lucie Boujenah and Tiphaine Daviot, the limited series has received two award nominations for its storyline and acting.
EccyReviews explained: "The show that I am talking about is called Marianne. Now this is an eight-part limited series, which is genuinely terrifying as it follows this author who begins to write this book about this witch, then begins to realise that the witch she is writing about is actually real."
Viewers react to the scares
After a disturbing encounter with someone from her past, the protagonist is forced to move back to her hometown and realises everything she has written has come true. EccyReviews added: "She begins to realise that this witch has been haunting her her entire life, and it is genuinely incredible."
Reacting to the recommendation on TikTok, one user said: "Excellent series and super creepy!" Another added: "Very scary. I can't sleep at night." A third user claimed it was even better than The Haunting of Hill House, while one more wrote: "Never heard of Marianne but looks like that's my weekend sorted."
Critical praise for the series
One IMDb reviewer wrote: "It seems like years that I was frightened by a horror. Half way through episode one and I am watching with my hands over my eyes. If you like being scared don't miss this."
Another reviewer praised the French production, noting the dubbing works well for those who cannot watch subtitles at all times, and concluded: "I absolutely loved Marianne! The acting was great, the setting and build-up just right and executed correctly. The twists were really good and that ending means we need a season two! We need it."
