Netflix is set to release a new figure skating drama, Finding Her Edge, on Thursday, 22 January, but the announcement has sparked outrage among subscribers who see it as a carbon copy of the cancelled series Spinning Out.
Based on Jennifer Iacopelli’s 2022 best-selling YA novel inspired by Jane Austen’s Persuasion, the series follows figure skating royalty Adriana Russo, played by Madelyn Keys, as she navigates family pressures and a fake dating scheme with her new partner Brayden (Cale Ambrozic), while grappling with feelings for her former partner Freddie (Olly Atkins) ahead of the Junior World Championships.
Fans were quick to compare the upcoming rom-com to Spinning Out, a 2020 Netflix drama about Olympic skater Kat Baker (Kaya Scodelario) that was cancelled after one season. Viewers expressed frustration that a similar show was being produced after Spinning Out was axed.
“So why cancel Spinning Out (which was a fantastic show) to make one that looks exactly like the other show?” one YouTube user asked. Another commented, “This is basically Spinning Out that Netflix will cancel after one season…” A third added, “ALL THESE SAME NEW SERIES after cancelling Spinning Out ? Makes no sense.”
Despite the backlash, Finding Her Edge is scheduled to premiere on Netflix next week, with book fans eager to see Iacopelli’s story adapted for the screen.
