Sports presenter Kelly Cates joked "I hate Jamie Redknapp" after a cheeky question on a podcast left her stunned. The Match of the Day co-host, 50, has known her Sky Sports colleague for almost 40 years. Her dad Sir Kenny Dalglish signed Jamie for Liverpool in 1991, during his first spell as Liverpool manager.
Kelly and Jamie have known each other ever since and have worked together on Sky's football coverage for many years. But now their close bond has come back to bite Kelly when she made an appearance on comedian Romesh Ranganathan's podcast. Romesh and Jamie also worked together, on sports-based comedy panel game show A League of Their Own.
Voice note embarrassment
Jamie made Kelly blush when he sent a voice note to Romesh with an embarrassing question for his fellow sports presenter. After a few seconds of building Kelly up, telling her how "she's brilliant at her job" and what "an amazing human" she is, he asked the question: "I want to know, what my nickname was from Kelly, when I had my bad eye infection?"
Kelly immediately said: "I hate him," before telling her host that the nickname for Jamie when he was struck down by the ailment was "Romesh". The comedian suffers from a condition called ptosis, which is a drooping eyelid, and a lazy eye on the right side of his face. This was caused by a severe childhood eye infection.
Rubber sheet revelation
Kelly went on say: "Oh my God, I really hate him. I genuinely, I've known him for coming up to 40 years now. But he does tell people that I have a rubber sheet on my bed." So he spends his life. He's like, 'she's great, she's a really nice human, I love working with her.' And then stitches me up, not once, but twice."
Romesh then had his say on the matter, who felt he was catching strays. He joked: "I feel like if Jamie has done you wrong like that, say something against him. Don't call him Romesh. That's on me. That's like I'm telling people you've got a rubber sheet. I've done nothing. I'm an innocent victim in all this."
Warm exchange
Kelly then began to say that her long-time friend was "very clever" at playing his cards close, which is where Romesh drew the line. He said: "No he's not, let me stop you there. I don't mind you coming on and offering opinion. What I won't have is you offering fundamental untruth." That comment had Kelly in stitches, who joked that "you need to fact check it" before conceding that she was "really warm".
