Netflix subscribers are repeatedly returning to The Haunting of Hill House, a 2018 miniseries that holds a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is widely described as a "masterpiece."
The 10-episode show, which debuted in October 2018, follows five siblings haunted by their past, with the story shifting between the present and flashbacks leading up to a pivotal day in 1992. The official synopsis reads: "Flashing between past and present, a fractured family confronts haunting memories of their old home and the terrifying events that drove them from it."
The series is a loose adaptation of the 1969 book of the same name by Shirley Jackson. Its ensemble cast includes Michiel Huisman, Elizabeth Reaser, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Kate Siegel, and Victoria Pedretti as the adult Crain siblings.
Why viewers keep coming back
One viewer who admitted disliking horror wrote: "I absolutely hate horror but had like 7 friends beg me to watch this, claiming the emotional intelligence of the story negated any downsides of my dislike of horror. I watched every episode in full daylight and even some through my fingers, but man were they right. Incredible series."
On Reddit this month, a fan praised the show, writing: "I almost forgot how hauntingly beautiful 'Haunting of Hill House' is... Considering it's Halloween month I was in the mood for [something] spooky. Such a beautiful show. Its haunting music, great actors. It's easily the best show Mike Flanagan has ever done. A true masterpiece. Way better than his current show Carrie, which has a YA feel to it. I hope he goes back to this kind of stuff.. Highly recommended. Give it a try if you haven't seen it yet."
Other viewers echoed the sentiment, with one commenting: "True masterpiece. The actors were so well chosen. He kept them for many of his other shows as well." Another called it "Absolute perfection 10/10."
Repeated rewatches and streaming details
One viewer shared their history of revisiting the series: "I first watched the Haunting of Hill House in 2018 since it was released. I watched it the second time in 2019 and now - in 2022 - the third time. It made me come back to it the third time since there hasn't been a better horror series released than this. I missed the experience watching it so I wanted to experience it again."
The Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus states: "The Haunting of Hill House is an effective ghost story whose steadily mounting anticipation is just as satisfying as its chilling payoff."
The complete 10-episode run of The Haunting of Hill House is available to stream on Netflix, with subscriptions starting from £7.99 a month. Its sister series, The Haunting of Bly Manor, also starring Victoria Pedretti, is available on the platform as well.
