Netflix has released The One About Matthew Perry, a documentary exploring the life of the Friends star, featuring intimate testimony from his close family and friends. The documentary became available to stream on Tuesday, October 27.
The film looks at Matthew Perry's rise to fame through his role as Chandler Bing, as well as his struggles with addiction and recovery. It includes accounts from loved ones, including his sister Mia Perry Bowick.
A tribute released near the anniversary of his death
Perry died in October 2023, with his death later ruled an accident. The documentary arrives almost on the anniversary of his death as a tribute to the actor.
The official synopsis reads: "Told through intimate testimonies from close family and friends, this documentary event reveals the real Matthew Perry—generous, funny, vulnerable, larger than life—and the battles he fought to become the man behind the icon. A raw record of a life lived in full, and the honesty that became his greatest legacy."
Viewers and family share emotional reactions
In the documentary, Perry's sister describes visiting him in rehab, saying: "I visited him in rehab, like a family day. We were all sitting in like a big group together, and a lot of other people were there with their families."
She added: "At one point Matthew might have been sharing, and I just started crying, and I actually got up and ran out of the room.... just hyperventilating and crying, just overwhelmed." She also said: "He was the most special person on the planet. Whenever I got scared or I was crying, he would immediately make me start laughing. He's immediately come in and save the day."
Viewers have already reacted emotionally on X, with one person writing: "Still weird that the guy who made a generation laugh never really got to enjoy the quiet. This one is going to hit."
