Netflix has announced price increases for its UK subscribers, with the Standard plan rising by £2 to £12.99 per month and the Premium plan increasing by £1 to £18.99. The cheapest ad-supported tier will also go up by £1 to £5.99. The changes follow similar hikes in the US and are part of the company's strategy to 'deliver more value' ahead of the return of hit shows such as Stranger Things, Squid Game and Wednesday.
Many subscribers have reacted angrily, with some vowing to cancel their memberships. One user wrote: 'Another £2 price increase from Netflix… yeah time to cancel.' Another said: 'Netflix is raising their prices again but if so please start giving us more. Maybe it’s my age showing, but there hasn’t been anything that is must see on that platform anymore.'
A Netflix spokesperson defended the move, stating: 'As we continue to invest in programming and deliver more value for our members, we will occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so that we can reinvest to further improve Netflix.' The streaming giant ended 2024 with over 300 million subscribers, boosted by a crackdown on password sharing, and saw its net worth double to $1.8bn (£1.45bn).
The latest price rise follows an increase in October 2023, when the basic ad-free plan went from £6.99 to £7.99 and the premium tier from £15.99 to £17.99. The new prices take effect immediately for new subscribers and will roll out to existing members in the coming weeks.
