Netflix Announces Price Hike: What It Means for Your Wallet
Netflix announces price increase for UK and US subscribers

Netflix has confirmed another price increase for its streaming services, affecting millions of subscribers in the UK and the US. The move comes as the platform continues to invest in original content and crack down on password sharing.

What's Changing?

The premium tier, which offers 4K Ultra HD streaming and allows up to four simultaneous screens, will now cost £17.99 per month in the UK – a £2 increase. In the US, the same plan jumps by $3 to $22.99.

The standard plan (HD, two screens) rises by £1 to £11.99 in the UK and by $2 to $15.49 in the US. Meanwhile, the basic plan (SD, one screen) remains unchanged at £7.99 in the UK but increases by $1 to $11.99 in America.

Why Now?

Industry analysts suggest this price adjustment reflects Netflix's growing content budget and its recent efforts to boost revenue through password-sharing restrictions. The company reported adding 5.9 million subscribers last quarter following its crackdown on account sharing.

A Netflix spokesperson stated: "We offer a range of pricing options to suit different needs, and our members continue to find great value in our service."

How Subscribers Are Reacting

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions:

  • Some loyal users say they'll absorb the cost for quality content
  • Others threaten to downgrade their plans or cancel altogether
  • Many are reconsidering their overall streaming budget

With the cost-of-living crisis continuing, this price rise may push some households to reevaluate their entertainment spending.

What Are the Alternatives?

For those considering switching:

  1. Disney+ currently costs £7.99/month in the UK
  2. Amazon Prime Video comes included with Prime membership (£8.99/month)
  3. Apple TV+ remains one of the most affordable at £6.99/month

However, none offer Netflix's vast content library or frequency of new releases.

The new prices take effect immediately for new subscribers, while existing members will be notified 30 days before their price changes.
