'Masterpiece' Netflix Thriller a Must-Watch for Spielberg Fans

A spectacular new Netflix thriller series has accumulated millions of views within its first 10 days of release. Launched on Thursday, May 21, it received enormous praise from audiences and critics alike, securing a remarkable 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Second Season Hints for 'The Boroughs'

Devotees of the inaugural season eager for more now have a promising indication that a second season might be in the works. The first eight-episode run of The Boroughs achieved an impressive 15 million views. Executive produced by Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers, the programme follows a group of pensioners in an apparently perfect community in New Mexico who gradually discover a sinister, supernatural secret concealed deep within their town.

Alfred Molina stars as the reluctant new resident Sam Cooper, alongside a distinguished ensemble including Alfre Woodard, Denis O'Hare, Clarke Peters, and Geena Davis. Since its launch, the series created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews has become Netflix's global number one programme. It still ranks eighth on the platform's UK chart nearly a month after release, even surpassing the eagerly awaited second series of The Four Seasons.

Spielberg Comparisons and Fan Praise

With the opening instalment ending on a spine-chilling cliffhanger, fans anticipate Netflix approving a second series any moment. Viewers have drawn favourable parallels to classic 1980s Steven Spielberg films, making it essential viewing for anyone who watched the legendary director's latest film Disclosure Day.

One glowing 10/10 review on IMDb enthused: "You can feel the influence of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Goonies, and especially Cocoon throughout the series. There are also strong Spielberg-inspired touches in the way the show mixes awe, suspense, humour, and human emotion."

Another fan called it an "absolute masterpiece" that "might actually top" Stranger Things in quality. "This show tells a meaningful tale about aging and grieving, all wrapped up in an irresistible adventure," they continued. "A must watch. I can't wait to see what they will do with the story, renew the show already!!"

The Boroughs is available to stream on Netflix.
