1% Club Kids Special Stumps Viewers with Tricky Maths Question

The 1% Club kids special, which aired late last month, saw host Lee Mack preside over 100 contestants aged nine to 15, all vying for a trip to Walt Disney World in Florida. However, the questions aimed at younger audiences proved challenging for viewers at home.

One question at the 25% stage of the game, with 26 contestants remaining, read: 'On Hannah’s 6th birthday, she went to a theme park. She really wanted to ride this rollercoaster but she was only one metre tall. Every year, Hannah gets five centimetres taller. How old will she be when she becomes able to ride the rollercoaster?' The accompanying sign stated: 'To ride, you must be at least 140cm tall or 12 years old.'

Lee Mack joked: 'This is just like being back at school isn’t it, only with a really cool supply teacher.' He then revealed that five contestants had been eliminated by the question. Although Hannah would be 14 when she reached the height requirement, the correct answer was 12, as the sign allowed children aged 12 or older to ride regardless of height. Contestant Matilda later explained: 'I looked at the question while you were reading it and I didn’t work it out so I just put 12.'

Ultimately, five contestants reached the 1% question, with Ellie and Finley winning the trips. They answered: 'What number replaces the question mark in this pyramid?' The pyramid had 9 on top, 8 and 10 below, then 9, 7 and a missing number, and finally 10, 8, 60 and 20. The answer was 13, as each number was the average of the two beneath it.

In a recent repeat, contestants Christopher and Scott attempted to win a share of £95,000 by counting triangles in a picture. The correct answer was 18, but Christopher guessed eight and Scott guessed 19, proving that even adults struggle under the 30-second time limit.
