Zara Tindall can tell Prince William he is being pompous

Prince William's cousin Zara Tindall can tell him when he is being "pompous", and royal commentators say her candid advice could prove increasingly valuable when he becomes King.

Zara, the daughter of Princess Anne, has built a successful career outside the Royal Family as an equestrian, giving her a different perspective on royal life and the challenges facing the monarchy.

A Unique Bond with the Heir

Royal expert Robert Jobson previously told the Daily Mail that Zara is someone who can challenge Prince William directly. According to Jobson, Zara "can tell the heir to the throne he is being pompous" and "he takes it", because she knew him "before he was a headline".

That long-standing familiarity could be particularly valuable as Prince William faces the pressures of becoming King. Having relatives who are willing to speak frankly, rather than simply defer to his position, may provide an important source of perspective.

Glimpses of Family Life

Her influence came into focus following Prince William's appearance on The Graham Norton Show, where the future King shared unexpected stories about his childhood ambitions, including a brief interest in becoming a DJ. He revealed he had even come up with a stage name: DJ Xara, with an X, which raised the possibility of a playful nod to his cousin, although William did not explain whether the name was inspired by her.

Zara has never been a working royal, instead pursuing a career as an accomplished equestrian. Alongside her husband, former rugby player Mike Tindall, she has maintained a public profile while remaining closely connected to the Royal Family.

Close Ties Across Generations

Zara's relationship with Prince William also extends to the next generation. She is godmother to Prince George, Prince William and Princess Kate's eldest son, keeping her place close within the Prince and Princess of Wales's family circle.

The Tindalls are also known for their relaxed approach to family life. Mike has previously revealed that Catherine enjoys playing prosecco pong with the couple, describing her as "uber competitive". Royal editor Emily Andrews has previously said the couple's appeal lies in "glamour, modernity and, crucially, loyalty to their royal relations" as qualities that bring a positive influence to the institution.
