Rick Achberger, the WWE fan known to the universe as 'Sign Guy,' has died. His health deteriorated "rapidly" before his passing on September 27.
WWE's head of creative, Triple H, broke the news on X, writing: "Saddened to hear of the death of Rick Achberger, known to the WWE Universe as 'Sign Guy.'"
"For decades, Rick was a fixture at events holding a sign that expressed exactly how he felt about you that given evening. He will be missed by the entire @WWE family. We send condolences to his family and friends."
A memorable WWE fixture
Triple H included two photos in his post, capturing Achberger doing what made him a memorable part of the show. One snap showed Triple H with Achberger during the former's run as WWE champion. The other showed Achberger holding a sign with a toilet seat alongside Triple H's picture and the words: "HHH IS C**P."
Achberger was among the best-known WWE faces outside the ring. His outfit of a blue workman's shirt, red hat and plain black-and-white signs often meant the cameras were on him.
Tributes from fans and podcasters
Wrestling podcaster Lance Peterson wrote: "It's with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of WWE Sign Guy Rick Achberger… He was an absolutely great guy and loved talking with fans at the shows. He tackled some health problems a couple of years ago, but last month began to go downhill rapidly. Rest in peace."
Fans also paid tribute under Peterson's post. One wrote: "The original green shirt guy. I saw him so many times watching back in the day." Another commented: "He was such a wonderful kind soul in a world where more of that is needed for sure! He was so full of life and energy! My heart goes out to all his family and friends!"
